As most people have heard me say, I adopted Sedona from a shelter in Denver when I was 25 years old. She was 10 months old, skinny, and scared but I knew she was my girl. As we settled into our new life together, I quickly learned what it meant to put someone else’s needs before mine – a big and important lesson. On March 6 I said goodbye to my best girl. She was 15 years old.
In 2018, Sedona became a big sister when we adopted Zephyr and then again in 2019 when Fleet was born. I’ll never forget what a devoted teacher Sedona was to both of them – patient, kind, and attentive. That was my girl.
My heart is shattered but I know that I gave her 15 loving and fun years. Wookie was with her for 10 years, Zephyr learned almost everything she knows from her, and I hope Fleet will always remember her.
Although I’ll never get over this loss, I thought writing about her would help ease my pain. Sedona was by my side for all the ups and downs. I cried in her fur, celebrated with her, and experienced the most memorable adventures with her. Even though I rescued her from the shelter, she actually rescued me.
