There is nothing like a family shred and, like so many things, it all started with Sedona. The first time I snowboarded with her was March 2016. I will never forget how cool it was riding next to my best girl. She was eight years old and hauling ass. Wookie, Dan the Wrench, and Reed were with us and it was amazing. The following month, we trekked up Red Tail which was so hard but so rewarding. Splitboarding adventures followed and she did it pretty regularly until about age 12. Wow I miss her every day.
In January 2022, I splitboarded with Zephyr for the first time and it was just as cool. Wookie took us to Meadow Mountain in Minturn and once again that feeling of being able to glide down a mountain with my sweet pup was unforgettable. Zephyr loved it so much that now she and Wookie go splitboarding every Thursday night. Just like big sister, she loves the snow and is fast!
Although we have taken Fleet up to the mountain every winter since he was born, this month was the first time we officially went snowboarding as a family – all thanks to ECCA’s Learn to Snowboard days at Beaver Creek that took place at the beginning of February. Since the beginning of the season, we had encouraged Fleet to take a lesson but he was fearful of what a lesson with someone he did not know would entail. We knew that all he needed was to learn from someone else (thank you Ayden!) and those two days (February 3 and 4) were game-changers for our family.
Watching Fleet progress these past few weeks has been incredible. Thinking about it brings happy tears to my eyes because he is having fun doing something Wookie (especially) and I love and overcame a huge fear. In fact, last weekend Fleet conquered his first blue run! Clearly, I had to write about it. After a few tough months of sickness, February 2025 has been a month to celebrate. We are looking forward to more mountain fun for the rest of the winter and into spring!
